Doğançay Museum
The Dogancay Museum is housed in a five-story, 200-year-old building in Istanbul’s bustling Beyoglu neighborhood. It is one of the first modern art museums in Turkey. It gives a broad overview of a selection of one of Turkey’s most prominent artists, Burhan Dogançay’s, prodigious body of work covering Dogançay’s artistic development over a five-decade period, from his early figurative paintings to his wall-inspired artwork and photography.
Dogançay Museum is Turkey’s first contemporary art museum and was opened in 2004. It is located in a 150-year-old historical building in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. The museum exhibits some of Burhan Doğançay’s works and the works of his father Adil Dogançay. Burhan Dogançay’s works show his 50-year artistic development, starting from his early figurative paintings to works and photographs inspired by city walls.
Since 2005, the museum has been organizing juried art competitions in primary schools in cooperation with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and sponsors. An average of 7 thousand students from 1500 schools participate in these competitions every year. The students who come first are rewarded with trips to Paris in 2006 and London in 2007. The museum plans to continue its support for art education in the future.
