The legendary Ottoman ruler Suleyman the Magnificent ordered the construction of the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in the 1560s for his beloved daughter Princess Mihrimah. It was created as a mosque complex with a madrasa, hamam, tomb, and a row of shops underneath the mosque. It was designed by skilled head architect Sinan the Architect and is a must-see mosque if you love history.

Mihrimah Sultan Mosque is the second and largest of the two mosques located in Edirnekapı and was built by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Suleyman the Magnificent. The construction of the mosque, designed by Sinan the Architect, started in 1563 and was completed in 1570.

The mosque has been damaged by earthquakes several times. Some of the stairs of the minaret collapsed in 1719, the minaret and the main dome were damaged in the earthquake in 1766, and in the great earthquake in 1894, the minaret collapsed in the northwest corner of the mosque. The mosque was repaired in 1956-57, but its dome was damaged again in the 1999 Izmit earthquake.

In the first phase of the last restoration carried out between 2007 and 2010, the upper part of the mosque and minaret was repaired. In the second phase, the asphalting of the courtyard, the repair of the central fountain, and the reconstruction of the outer portico were carried out. Although the mosque originally had a double portico, only the interior has survived to the present day.
