One of Istanbul’s most well-known mosques, it is located near the Galata Bridge and the Spice Market on Golden Horn. The mosque actually dates back to 1663, hence the name New Mosque is a bit misleading. It is a towering building with a sizable open area in front where vendors of birdseed have developed a thriving pigeon colony. It was constructed as a part of a complex that included a hospital, hamam, fountains, and a market, and it has a characteristically rich interior.
